Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee in 2022, marking 70 years of service. If you are looking to raise a glass to Queen Elizabeth for her upcoming celebratory Platinum Jubilee, why not try her favourite drink – The Dubonnet cocktail.
The ‘Zaza’ cocktail – also known as Gin and Dubonnet is said to be Queen Elizabeth’s favourite cocktail. According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, who worked for the royal for 11 years, the great French aperitif is her ultimate “favourite drink”. Her choice of drink has a sweet tradition behind it, as it was a favourite of the Queen’s mother as well.
What is Dubonnet?
Essentially, Dubonnet is a sweet, fortified wine aperitif made with herbs and species from France. Dubonnet is quite bitter when drank neat or on the rocks, however, it pairs perfectly with gin or tonic water. This drink has been around for many years since Joseph Dubonnet first sold it in 1846 to help treat French Legion soldiers from malaria in North Africa and to make it more palatable for the troops. In the early 1900s, the Dubonnet Cocktail made its first debut in Britain and quickly became a famous medicinal aperitif around the world.
So, bring the bar into the kitchen with these simple steps on how to make the Queen’s favourite cocktail – The Dubonnet cocktail.
