Is your marketing strategy actually working?
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of marketing, posting on social, working with influencers, securing PR coverage or running paid ads. But being busy doesn’t necessarily mean your marketing is effective.
A successful marketing strategy isn’t about being everywhere or constantly producing more content. It’s about having a clear understanding of who you’re trying to reach, what you want to achieve and which marketing channels will get you there.
If your marketing feels disconnected, difficult to measure or simply isn’t delivering the results you expected, it could be time for a rethink.
Here are five signs to look out for.
1. Your marketing channels aren’t working together
One of the biggest signs of a marketing strategy that needs attention is when every channel seems to operate independently.
Individually, these activities might be working. But together, they aren’t necessarily building towards the same goal.
A strong marketing strategy should create consistency across every customer touchpoint. Your PR, social media, influencer marketing, advertising and content should feel like parts of the same brand story rather than separate activities.
This doesn’t mean every channel needs to say exactly the same thing. Instead, they should have a shared strategic direction and reinforce one another.
If you can’t clearly explain how your marketing channels work together, it may be time to rethink your strategy.
2. You’re struggling to reach new audiences
Your existing customers know you. Your social followers engage with your content. But how are you reaching people who have never heard of your brand?
A strong marketing strategy should include ways to consistently put your brand in front of new and relevant audiences.
That could mean using PR to reach new publications, influencers to tap into established communities, paid advertising to reach specific demographics or social campaigns designed to increase your reach.
The right approach will depend on your brand, audience and objectives. The important thing is that audience growth should be an intentional part of your marketing strategy, not something you hope happens organically.
3. You’re doing lots of marketing but not seeing results
More activity doesn’t automatically mean better results.
If you’re constantly creating content, posting on social media or running campaigns without seeing a meaningful difference in awareness, engagement, traffic or sales, it’s worth asking why.
The answer might not be to do more. You may need to rethink where you’re investing your time and budget.
Perhaps you’re relying too heavily on organic social media when you need greater reach. Maybe your brand has a compelling story that isn’t being used effectively in PR. Perhaps influencers could help you connect with a highly engaged niche audience, or paid advertising could put your strongest creative in front of the right people.
The key is knowing what you’re trying to achieve and which channels are best placed to achieve it. A marketing strategy rethink can help identify where the biggest opportunities are, and where your budget and effort are better spent.
4. You don’t know what’s actually working
Marketing doesn’t need to have an immediate, measurable return every time. Building brand awareness, trust and consideration can take time.
But you should still have a clear idea of what success looks like and how your current marketing activity is performing.
If you can’t answer questions like:
- What is this campaign trying to achieve?
- Who are we trying to reach?
- Which metrics actually matter?
- What does success look like?
- How does this activity contribute to our wider business goals?
It’s time to revisit your strategy.
5. Your marketing strategy doesn’t reflect where your brand is now
Your business may have changed since your current marketing strategy was created.
Perhaps you’ve launched new products, entered a new market, grown your customer base or changed how you want to position the brand.
But is your marketing keeping up?
A strategy that worked two years ago might not be right for your brand today. Your audience may have changed, your competitors may have moved on and new opportunities may have emerged.
Your marketing strategy should evolve as your business does.
Does your marketing strategy need a rethink?
If any of these signs sound familiar, the answer isn’t necessarily to spend more on marketing.
It could simply be about spending smarter and making sure everything is working towards the same goal.
Sometimes that means refining what you’re already doing. Sometimes it means changing your channel mix. And sometimes it means bringing in external expertise to identify the opportunities you’ve become too close to see.
At Escapade, we combine PR, social media, influencer marketing, advertising and creative thinking to help brands build marketing strategies that get noticed and deliver results.
