As we hit October, Halloween is fast-approaching but this year UK shoppers may be in for a scarier surprise and this time it’s not the ghosts.
An article in The Guardian have looked at how the price of chocolate has surged by 11% over the past year, far outstripping overall grocery inflation, which stands at 2.7%. This increase could leave many of us rethinking how much we spend on sweet treats this year.
The soaring cocoa prices are set to hit chocolate brands hard, creating challenges that will likely trickle down to consumers. With West Africa’s cocoa trees—responsible for more than half of the global supply—ravaged by disease and unpredictable weather, brands are feeling the squeeze. Major producers like Ghana and Ivory Coast are struggling with reduced yields due to an unusually wet rainy season, worsened by climate change. As cocoa becomes scarcer, brands are facing increased production costs, which many are passing on through higher prices.
But it’s not just cocoa that’s pushing up costs. Sugar, another essential ingredient, has also seen sharp price hikes due to adverse weather conditions in Brazil and India, two of the world’s top sugar producers. Fertiliser prices, deforestation, and land degradation from illegal mining are also affecting the cocoa supply chain, adding further pressure on brands that rely heavily on these ingredients.
For many, Halloween means stocking up on a selection of sweets and chocolate to hand out to eager trick-or-treaters. But with prices climbing at such a rapid rate, some households may be reconsidering their Halloween traditions this year.
