If you are a content creator you may have received an email from YouTube recently asking you to create your own unique channel handle. But what exactly does this mean? And when will this be rolling out across the platform?
What is it?
YouTube are describing the handles as “a new way for people to easily find and engage with creators and each other on YouTube”. Each handle is unique to their creator, helping fans and creators connect more easily with each other- increasing the community feel of a channel.
How does it work?
As YouTube state “in most cases, if a channel already has a personalized URL, that will automatically become their default handle, or they can opt to change the handle for their channel as soon as the notification in YouTube studio comes through”.
What can you do with it?
“Handles will appear on channel pages and Shorts, so they’ll be instantly and consistently recognizable”. You can mention people in comments, search for a particular channel and tag yourself in a recent collab. All of this to help your channel and your brand stand out.
When will it be happening?
YouTube have said they are rolling out invites to create your own handle in phases, depending on channel size and how active the channel is. From 14th November 2022, YouTube will assign your channel a handle, if you have not already made one. But don’t worry! You can change it in the YouTube studio if you would like to!
