TIPS TO SHAPE UP YOUR PHOTO SKILLS IN TIME FOR THE SUMMER!

Are you the one in your group of friends that just can’t nail “the shot”? Are you ever envious of seeing feeds full of picture perfect meals, impeccable décor and flawless fashion and beauty? True, much of what we see on Instagram is a distortion of real life, but also true is that with the current smartphone capabilities, just about anyone can take an Insta worthy shot with a bit of practice!

Here are our top three tips to shape up your photography skills ahead of the Summer… And not mention of a picture editing App in sight!

1. ALWAYS OPT FOR NATURAL LIGHT

Good lighting is the seed for any good photo! Understanding how to use light is the first and most important rule of getting great photos using only your phone. As a rule of thumb, avoid using your flash in favour of natural light, which creates photos that are richer and brighter, as a flash can wash out your subject.

If you can’t shoot outdoors, take photos near windows or in well-lit rooms. Even at night, it’s preferable to find sources of light such as a street lamp or store window.

2. CHANGE YOUR VIEWPOINT

Most people automatically go to take a photo by holding it up around eye level to snap. To take an interesting photo, why not try experimenting with different angles and vantage point?

Try clicking from above or below, crouching low to the ground, climbing up high, or tilting from a different angle. Obviously also remember to stay safe in your pursuit of a new perspective however…!

3. FOLLOW THE RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds is one of the most well-known composition principles, and refers to a simple method of balancing your image. It divides an image into a 3×3 grid, and aligns the subjects or objects in a photo along the grid lines to create balance.

So depending on your image, you may look to align and object, shapes, textures, colours and any other elements that make up your image.

As a first step, turn on the grid lines for your phone camera in settings, and use them to practice aligning your photos. You can then play with centering your photo, or shooting aligned to either side, and building other areas of composition in your remaining thirds.
