I recently came across an intriguing article published on NPR about a new Gen Z trend on Instagram, which author Bobby Allyn called ‘Grid Zero’.
So, what is it? And why is Gen Z leading the way in this new development? Here is a roundup of what I learnt from the article.
Grid Zero Explained
Grid Zero refers to the developing phenomenon which involves users hiding all the photos on their Instagram profiles, creating a deliberate blank grid.
According to Kim Garcia, who plays a key role in researching cultural trends on Instagram for Meta, this trend is being led by Gen Z.
She states: “Gen Z is growing up in this era that is so public. They don’t have the same private spaces to explore, or be weird, or figure themselves out, that older generations, like myself as a millennial, had growing up.”
Garcia reiterates that Gen Z are still using Instagram, just more privately than older generations.
The Appeal of Grid Zero
For many, hiding their Instagram grid is a way to take back control of their online presence and protect their privacy. It’s a design choice that embraces minimalism and rejects the constant need for public validation.
Also, the rise of Grid Zero can be seen as a reaction to the oversaturation of social media. Platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram have made it difficult for users, especially younger ones, to find moments of privacy and escape from the constant public eye.
Sneaky Social Shares
Alternatively, some users are posting, but doing it sneakily.
Garcia explains that some are posting onto their feed, immediately archiving the post, and then taking it out of their archive days later. That way, it doesn’t appear on their friends’ feeds, but it shows up on their grids, almost like a hidden surprise!
Changing Social Media Behaviour
This type of trend leans into the growing changes of social media behaviour, a topic I wrote about in March.
In that blog post I detailed how Instagram were releasing more DM features ‘as it works to enhance the usage of messaging as the key connective element in the app’ (Social Media Today).
This was due to the platform recognising that users were starting to engage with the app more privately, preferring to send messages and posts to friends, rather than posting updates on their main feed or stories.
It seems that the developing Grid Zero trend is an extension of this behaviour, although Instagram has not provided specific data on this trend yet.
Summary
Overall, whether it’s driven by a desire for privacy, a reaction to digital addiction, or simply a longing for mystery in the age of oversharing, Grid Zero is changing the way users interact on social media.
As Gen Z continues to shape the digital landscape, we can expect to see more shifts in how we perceive and use social media platforms like Instagram in the future.
