You’ve probably heard about the recent news of Sir David Attenborough joining Instagram – who knows, you may even be following him.
And his recent debut on Instagram has now made one of Britain’s favourite broadcasters a world record holder, attaining the record of fastest time to reach one million followers.
Taking just over four hours to hit one million, Attenborough broke the internet and overtakes former record holder, Jennifer Anniston, who previously reached one million in just over five hours in October last year.
His opening video explaining why he has taken to Instagram is a real touching one, which highlights the bleak future of our world if we continue down the same path. He explains:
“I’ve been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years, but this is my first time on Instagram. And I’m making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble. Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on and on. But we know what to do about it and that’s why I’m tackling this new way, for me, of communication.”
As a 94-year-old with little experience on social media, his debut on Instagram demonstrates the severity of climate change and the desperate need to get the conversation going amongst all age groups. Attenborough is hopeful that utilising Instagram will better communicate climate change to a world that is very much social media obsessed – by reaching younger audiences who are the key to the future of planet earth.
His recent posts introduce his latest film, A Life On Our Planet, which he calls his “witness statement” and others have dubbed “an obituary for the Earth” – these words alone are truly moving and thought provoking. As the most influential naturalist influencer, his introduction to Instagram is a welcomed one and we’re keen to see the impact he’ll continue to have on social media. And if anyone is going to inspire younger generations to take action, we’re confident David can do it.
This is also not the first time he’s broken records, with many other achievements worthy of celebrating under his name. Previously he’s managed to bag the title of world record holder for the longest career in TV as both a presenter and a naturalist.
Now at over five million followers we suggest you go check him out if you haven’t already!
