Can you remember a time when you didn’t dream of a sunshiny holiday?  The heat hitting your body as you step from an aeroplane door onto the steps, sitting poolside or the sound of the sea, the scent of sun cream and the general overindulgence on a quest to experience everything your destination has to offer on the menu….

With some Brits still braving the foreign holiday, for the majority of us, this year, the staycay is here to… well, stay!

According to research released this week, British holidaymakers will spend out a massive £5 billion on staycations in the British Isles this summer, offering a much-need boost to the tourism industry.

Almost half of Brits (42%) are reportedly keen on a taking domestic holiday in June – exploring new territories or visiting favourite family destinations and seeing just what has been hiding on our doorsteps this whole time! Confidence figures rise to 48% in July, and 60% in September, suggesting that the staycation will have legs for some time.

In fact, a survey by Square indicated that staycations will continue throughout 2022 and beyond as we discover even more of what our home country has to offer.  VisitBritain director Patricia Yates said: “This really is the year to rediscover the crown jewels of tourism in our cities with their outstanding mix of contemporary culture, buzzing hospitality, world-renowned heritage and first-class visitor attractions.

The top three holiday destinations in the UK are currently Cornwall (24%), The Lake District (21%) and Scotland (16%), with Edinburgh the most popular area to visit in Scotland (10%). And we’re picking a staycation based on location, accommodation and price – so potentially not dissimilar to our jaunts abroad.

In addition, holidaymakers will be encouraged to travel to their staycation destination, by train, and incentivised with vouchers to visit popular local tourist attractions, in a bid to recover tourism levels to a pre-pandemic state as the country looks to recovery.

So where are you headed on your holidays this year, or next?
